Body fat percentage chart.
Reference ranges can help explain a percentage. They cannot choose your ideal body fat or diagnose your health from a photo.
Adult reference ranges for women and men
The American Council on Exercise publishes descriptive body-fat categories. These selected bands give context to that chart; they are not personalized targets. An uncertain photo estimate can overlap more than one band.
| Reference group | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Athletes | 14–20% | 6–13% |
| Fitness | 21–24% | 14–17% |
| Average | 25–31% | 18–24% |

What does 20 percent body fat look like?
A single percentage does not correspond to one appearance. Muscle development, fat distribution, clothing, lighting and pose change what is visible. Body fat percentage pictures are visual examples, not a reliable way to identify your exact percentage.
Our AI body fat estimator gives a broad visual range and explains its limits. The physique score is a separate, subjective review of visible muscle development. Neither result is a health assessment.
Body fat percentage and BMI answer different questions.
Body fat percentage describes fat mass as a proportion of total body weight. BMI uses height and weight; it does not directly measure body fat or distinguish fat from muscle. Our RFM calculator uses height and waist instead, and still produces an estimate.
Does the chart change with age?
The selected ACE categories above are not an age-specific chart. Different reference charts and study populations can use different bands. Do not treat one table as a universal definition of your ideal body composition.
Our measurement calculator’s published validation sample covered ages 20–69. The AI photo estimator has no product-specific validation against a reference method. Read the accuracy guide and methodology before interpreting a number.
Keep your own progress in context.
Compare check-ins made with the same method and similar conditions. Changes in tape placement or a new photo angle can shift a result. Your private body fat progress tracker helps keep these check-ins together; it does not prove that a small change is real fat loss.
